I have a 86 f150 351w. with a c6 automatic trans, that I just pu from the junk yard.
I had my son install it at school ( vo-tech), fluid levels r ok!
took it for a test ride, from a stop position I would give it gas, and the truck would have a little bit of a rumbling feel, and if I give it gas slowly, there would be hardly no rumbling.
So I thought maybe the trans was sitting in the yard so long, that if I took it for a long ride that it might correct it self. So I took on a 30 mile ride at 65 - 75 mph ran as smooth as butter. but when I stoped for a toll, I gave it gas and the trans did'nt shift into 2nd until I took my foot off the gas, and back on, then it shifted and ran smooth as butter again. This only happens when I put it in drive and go. It's puzzeling the crap out of me.
Could it just be a band ajustment ( or ) should I just return the trans.
OR: can it be that the u-joints where not installed properly?
I'm at a loss at this point.
Oh! by the way: the trany filter, and the module has been replaced.
Check motor and trans mounts and torque converter nuts... maybe the rumble is something hitting something else (fan blades?) Assuming the 'students' got the right nails to hold the bell housing to the back of the engine... and tightened them...
The late shift can be caused by modulator or throttle pressure mal-adjustment. Make sure the vacuum hose is hooked up correctly on the modulator, and that the throttle pressure linkage has been adjusted. If they are wrong, the trans will 'think' you have the gas pedal floored, and keep the trans in low gear and shift late.

to adjust the throttle link(kick down rod) have someone go under the truck hold the kick down linkage all the way back open the throttle all the way the clearance btween the kick down linkage and the throttle lever should be about 1/8 inch adjust the clearance at the bolt on the linkage the modulator line off could cause the late hard shifts
