I saw a strange one going down the road the other day. I believe it was about a 1973 or so, but it was the bed that caught my eye.
The tool box on the passenger side was almost the entire area between the rear tire and the front of the box. I've seen the toolbox option, but this one was HUGE. The interior bed wall was even with the inside of the tire wells like a step side would be. It was a styleside type with really thick bed walls. I did't see the drivers side.
I've never seen a bed like this ever on anything before. It looked totally factory but the bed was optimized to carry a camper and provide as much bed storage as possible in the side walls.
Did Ford ever sell this one or is it a conversion by a third party?
You'd be suprised what you can see still on the roads here in Arizona.

It wasn't a tool box. It was spare tire storage. The truck was a camper special and it was a stock option from ford. The rear axle is set further back to allow a better center of gravity for carrying a slide in camper. Since the axle is further back, the spare won't fit under the bed. Wile it was stock, it was probably one of the rarer options.
There is a 74-75 Super Camper Special right down the road from me; in very good condition. Let me know if anyone is looking for one and wants details.
You guys have figured it out in this thread; the toolbox was optional (stand alone option) on 8' beds, and the SCS F350 had the wierd bed with setback axle, 140" wheelbase, and spare tire in the side of the bed.
My 79 250 4x4 ranger has one, and what is a styleside?? I have the little trim over the fender wells, and the aluminum rail that flows through the groove about 8 inches down from the hood all the way to my taillights. The little key that unlocks this box was the same one used for my gas cap. Truck came with two (keys). damn mechanic replaced that cap cause of ca smog rules, and now I dont have a lock on it... Just when gas prices are sky high!
Styleside is the standard bed style, as opposed to the step-side. You can buy aftermarket locking gas caps for cheep. Wont be as convenient as having the box keyed the same tho.
its a white steel gullwing toobox with the Ford logo in the base of it.... in my gallery of the ugly blue truck you can see my tool box, its just like that one, except with the logo. It came from the factory, and being painted steel from the 70s, they didn't last long.
I have one of those at my grandparents house! It came outta my grandads f-150 custom 4x4. They rusted to he!! real quick. Only one side opens now. Imagine that, I forgot all about that thing. I tried to repaint it after sanding it down, I tried lubricants, rustoleum, everything, the locks crapped out on me.. Oh well, what a bummer. That thing looked like hell when I had it on there anyways. I replaced it with a diamond plate delta, and a campway lumberack. Muto Bene...!

What in the heck would the gas cap have to do with smog rules? What smog does a 79 3/4 T have to have anyway??? Sounds fishy to me- Maybe his truck has matching gas caps now!!!
There is a new smog law in CA if the cap doesnt hold fumes at a certain PSI it must be replaced... Just another piece of crap to make you spend money out here I guess, but it is legitimate. There is a flow meter that the caps hook on to. I think it is either 6 or 9 psi, if it blows by, time for a new cap.
Also, every piece of original equipment must be in place on my pickup. Smog pump, pcv valve, 2bbl carb, all choke equipment for it, egr, single exhaust, and really retarted timing, catalytic converter.....the whole nine yards man. I wonder how much power she'll have after I take all that stuff off....
