okay, i need to clear this up because i keep seeing it. the camper special never ever had a side door spare tire storage. the only pickup bed that had side door spare tire storage was the SUPER camper special. the Super camper special is the longer wheel base truck while a camper special is the standard wheelbase longbed truck. super camper specials also came with those lovely 9.75X16.5 rims that i have on my truck. deal is they only got two! they came with different size rims front to back. hawkrod

GRAPEGRAVY the spare tire in the side of the bed only came on the "Super Camper Special". that's the truck they moved the rear axle back for better towing of a 5th wheel trailer. the camper special was just an option like the trailer special.

the only truck the toolbox did not come on was the short bed. because the area between the wheel well and the front of the bed was not long enough for the toolbox.

i've owned a truck with these package options, Custom, Ranger, Ranger XLT, Lariat, Camper Special, Trailer Special. none of them came with the toolbox. the truck i own now is my 2nd Ranger XLT and this one does have a tool box. as for the explorer f250 package coming with it i've seen few of them running around town here in Phx and they did not have them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is intriguing.
Which packages would those be ?
There is the :
Convenience package
Lighting package
Camper Special package
Trailer Package
Explorer Package
Security package
The only reference on tool boxes I have are from the brochures between 1970 & 1979.
They state the toolbox is just an option on 133" & 150" wheelbase Styleside Boxes.
I had a complete brain-fart on the Super Camper Special,,, I already knew that was the one that came with the spare tire compartment, what I got my current 460 out of. Makes sense. Move the axle back,,, no room for the spare underneath. As far as the toolboxes, I have yet to see one at all, thus the query. Thanks to all for the info. Guess no one around NJ went for that option
GrapeGravy i've seen a few trucks in NJ with them. i even bought a bed from a junk yard in Edison with one. i'm from Union,NJ but when i moved to AZ 2 1/2 years ago i lived in Sayreville (Bon JoVILLE) i just came home from there today. i was at my sister's in Springfield from 1/6, MAN was it COLD!!!!!. anyway he trucks out here dont rust and there are hundreds of them from the 60's and 70's still driving around town. that's why i probably why i see more of them than you do.
I guess everything has been covered on the toolbox.
I wonder if you can still get the white steel gullwing in bed tool boxes with the Ford oval stamped into the metal. I have only seen two, and they sure look cool. Maybe I can get the girl to paint me one. Hmmmm.
And another little note, those super camper specials are very rare, only 3300 were made during 73-9.
Must be all up north then, F350Super, I haven't seen one down south in all these years of climbing around boneyards. Then again,, I have been known to miss the obvious on an occasion or two And YES,,, It's COLD!!! The F350 Supercab I have now came from Cali,, perfect body Still can't get over how great it is. What's it like living in AZ compared to the east coast? Been contemplating lately where I want to spend the next 20 or so years. Feel free to email me through my profile link so as to not clog up the thread.
Matt, now you have me thinking I should go get the rest of the truck that I got this motor out of before it disappears. Might make for a nice project in the not-too-distant future.
I was hoping i could refresh this message and ask snydermotives question again, im in the process of restoring my truck, and all the latches i have seen (including mine) have been very rusty... in fact its about the only thing on my truck that is rusty, almost makes me think it came that way.
