Lx, this has been discussed a few times here now, I know, but I still haven't found a definitive answer. Did the Camper Specials come with the tire compartment or tool box? Was this an option? Or did the tire compartment just come with the Camper Specials that had the rear axle moved back? (the 1-tons?) I've run across quite of these in the local boneyards, but they all have the tire compartment, have yet to see the tool box one.

Congrats, btw, on your Modshipness. I've always valued your insight and knowledge with these Beauties and Beasts of the past. Between Torque and you, this board has now achieved "Wisdom" status,,,

The tool box is not restricted to the camper specials. My 77 ranger F150 has a side tool box.

my 77 F-150 Ranger parts truck with an 8' bed has a storage compartment in the passenger side, camper special beds have a large one to put the spare tire in also I think all of the camper specials had the wheels set back for hauling truck campers.

I was once curious about this as well and I believe I have the answer for us all. I asked the owner of everyone I have ever seen (yes everyone, asked them on the road, followed them into the gas station, whatever) and found out that you could order it on any truck. Although they came standand on the camper specials, you could have gotten them on any model.

they were not standard on ANY model. you just ordered it if you wanted it. they started with the option in the mid sixties and 79 was the LAST year you could get it.

Thanks

In 73, Ford came out with the Super Camper Special.
The spare Tire fit on the outside fo the box side (front) directly behind the cab.

The Toolbox was considered an option except for 2 types of trucks.
One being the truck with generator under the hood.

Now Now, Million,,, I Was talking to LX

You Admins are a whole nother story. Not a time goes by when I come here that I don't thank the Almighty Internet Gods for Webmaster, et.al. for setting up and running this site so smoothly. And,,, mainly,, for keeping it "civil".

Okay,,, so the tire compartment was available for the Camper Specials only? And the tool box was an option until 1979 on all models except two (one being the generator-clad one). Think I may have finally come to a solution on this, thanks

OK, Now I'm curious(Enquiring minds want to know)

Could the tool box be ordered as a single option or did it have to be ordered as part of a package?

Another question, also. Does the tool box have a separate key for the lock? I have the tool box, but the previous owner couldn't find the key for it.

Side toolbox

The toolbox had it's own key. It was a small square shaped key. The '79 F-250 Camper special I just sold had the original lock with 2 matching keys.

My book states its a option for EITHER side on a 1970 truck.

Explorer pkg on a F250 included the tool storage box.

So I would say it depends on the year and packages.

Never, ever seen one on the drivers side

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm retracting the 2 models standard equip comment.
After an in-depth search, it appears that the tool box was just an option. Not affliated with a special package.
It is pure and simple : just an Option only available on Styleside's.
