There is an active thread over at ford-trucks.com that originated with a user speaking w/ a Ford Diesel Engineer specifically about this issue. Basically the engineer said that the mechanical parts (injectors??) simply can't handle the pilot injection schemes and that after January 17, 2004 all new trucks and current flashes for existing '03/'04 engines will no longer employ pilot injection... end of story.

There is also speculation that these "emissions" recalls which are actually disabling the pilot injection are just disguised as emissions related making them mandatory.

Last question to the engineer.....

Is the PI coming back within the near future

I asked this question and I was told that they were working on it but that is was unlikely it would be used in the future. I asked why and that's when the discussion of the mechanical parts couldn't deal with the PI.

This is very disturbing news for those of us that liked the PI. I'm just relaying the info not confirming the validity but it does seem well presented and in a technical manner.

I chose Ford over Chevy because of Fords claimed that the new 6.0 was 15% more feul efficient then the 7.3. This is false, I have two other partners and a friend that have 7.3's that get better milage then I do with simular options. I love my new truck and happy I went with Ford, but I'd like to see Ford make good on the pilot injection that I PAID FOR. I believe PI is the root cause of the milage decrease. My dealers coment to this was "Fork Trucks are not rated for MPG".

Interestingly enough. This would account for the problem with the injectors leaking and not being able to withstand the constant pressures from the pilot injection system. This would also back up the "so called" silent recall on early model injectors leaking and causing the crankcase to fill up with diesel and trashing the motor. Once again, we are bandaiding the problem and not actually fixing it. How long will your engine go, before she blows?
