I have a 2000 V10 F350 with the limited slip 3.73 rear end. Ford says to use synthetic 75-140 gear oil. My Ford dealer has it for $18.00 a quart! (I have the Mag-Hytec cover so I need 6 quarts).
I can get Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil for $7.00 a quart but it is 75-90.
Does anyone know if the weight difference would cause any problems? I live in Southern California so the temperatures are not too extreme.
make sure you use 75-140 as V10man says.. synth any brand will do. They do make gaskets for the rear and use the right stuff gasket maker in a can..you need friction modifier also...??
V10 man has it right. Your cover should have the drain plug so you don't have to bother taking the cover off. I have used Amsoil in my last 4 trucks, never a problem.
Synthetic in diffs should be good for 100K or lifetime if not submerged in water. Continual heavy towing may shorten that time--the rear diff gets very warm under load.
