Ford recommends a synthetic gear oil for the rear end on the F350. Mines a V10 with limited slip 3.73 gears. Ford uses a 75-140 weight and they want $18.00 a quart (I need 6 quarts due to a Mag-hytec cover).
I can get Mobil 1 full synthetic for about $7.00 a quart but the weight is 75-90. I live in Southern California so the temps are not too extreme.
Anyone see a problem with running the 75-90 instead of the 75-140?
Don't know about the weight and such but I do know the Ford oil has an additive to make the limited slip system work. I put Mobil 1 in my last truck and had to take it out because the limited slip system did not work at all. I think that you can buy the additive but am not sure so make sure you check it out. OH the shop that put the Mobil 1 in swore he had done it many times and it worked. He was lying!!!!
With the fluid Ford sells you still need to add the additive for the limited slip. I added the required amount when I put the mobil 1 in (4 ozs. per 3 quarts).
IMHO - synthetic oil in the rear dff is a waste. Then again - I am used to heavy off road use on my vehicles and diff fliud gets changed one or more times a year depending on trail conditions.
I run 90 wt. in all kinds of diff's - it will work just fine
The mechanic at my dealership said a varitey of weights could work as long as they're synthetic - it has to be synthetic - he said. And of course if it's a ls rear, then you have to add the ls additive.
Yeah, btw, when I saw how much the Motorcraft diff oil cost I about fell over.
