Can someone help me out with this?? I saw the thread on here, but it doesn't help much. Has anyone done this? Can someone give me detailed instructions..maybe with pictures?? Anything would help, thanks guys.
Is this the 2.3L? If so, between the air filter housing and the throttle body there is a black insert. ~8" long. loosen the two hose clamps and pull this muffler out. I found some 2 1/2" PVC in the conduit section of my local Megaware store and it fit in place great. Just be sure to clean it before installing.
On the 2.5L there are some clips that are very difficult to unhook. A thin flat screwdriver works well. You can pry the silencer out with the same screwdriver. A section of PVC works, but it doesn't mold to the oval shape that some vehicles have. If you go to your local nursery and get one of those black, one gallon buckets, you can cut out a custom piece of it to take the place of the silencer.
NOTE: If you go with my route, you will have a flat piece of plastic that you curl into the shape you want, a one gallon bucket intact will not fit.
xranger,
the other thing i found helpfull was in an earlier thread was to tighten the throttle cable. With the combination of the air muffler and and cable adjustment i have noticed an improvement. to tighten the throttle cable just take a couple of cable ties and place them between the cable and the upper portion of the pedel. this made an improvement in the response and I was happy for the $7 or so I spent for all.
I dont know about on the 2.3 (I guess they are the same inside) but on my 4.0 xlt i noticed a spring between the pedal and the cable. I guess it is there to take vibration out of the pedal. But think about it, you mash the gas, the spring compresses, the spring bouces back pulling the cable. Now if you can eliminate the spring the pedal will pull straight on the cable. it might give you an extar tenth or something, but when races are won and lost by hundreths, everylittle bit helps.
I still want to know where the silencer is on my 4.o so i can cut it out.
Originally posted by stackclimber I found this page a while back and it took me a little while to find it again Hopefully I can post the link. They are not kidding when they say it is louder.
Is it really louder? I took mine out and don't notice any difference. 99XLT...I don't know exactly where yours is, but if you look down at your air box where it is pressed up against the wall right before the grill, you can see a round plastic pipe sticking out of the air box and through the wall. If you pull the air box cover and air filter out just follow that air inlet out. That whole inlet is the silencer. You can try cutting it out or pulling the lower air box and prying it out.
Could you go into any more detail? I am new to auto-related repair. Did you mean inside the truck, by the gas pedal? Just put some ties between the gas pedal and the throttle cable??
This was in an earlier thread here on FTE. I will do my best to describe.
Inside the cab locate where the throttle cable ends at the pedal. There is a press cap on the end of the cable. If you pull on this cable you will find some slack in the cable. Use something like a cable tie to insert as a sort of spacer it may take more than 1, mine took two med. sized ties. It was a bit of a pain bent and twisted under the dash but the added throttle response was worth it.
PS, 4.0 I think that spring is what returns the pedal to idle position, I would not mess with that. Maybe some one knows for sure.
No there is a spring on the trottle body for that. This is a tiny spring on the top of the pedal under the dash. It moves with the pedal and doesnt push it back.
I didnt go outside today im sick as a dog. I work tomorrow but i might call in. Ill try to remove the silincer.
