Wasted spark?

Is the ignition on the first generation Explorer a wasted spark ignition? If so, can someone help direct me to some documentation that I can reference to for this? I am working on a class project and it involves my '94 Explorer and ignition.
Thanks!

Never mind, found the answer in the Chiltons manual. The 6 cylinder engine has a coil pack that consists of three coils. Each coil fires for two cylinders. Once on an and once on compression of each cylinder.

By the way, the info I found was in the Haynes manual, not Chiltons.
