Alanscott, That would be the California grizzly, Ursula californicus extinct since 1922. It was adopted as the state animal in 1953.

The flag flew a few months in 1846 during the Bear Flag Revolt. It was soon replaced by "Old Glory" since the U.S. was at war with Mexico. It was origninally on the flag of the Republic of California adopted as a state flan in 1911.

P.S. Its a symbol of great strength; its also extinct.

UPDATE:
The new state seal will be changed to help our new governor pronounce it. When you hear him say it, pay attention.

"Caul-i-for-n-i-a"
State Seal- Cauliflower

Hahaha. Gotta love it!

On a lighter note. Why are you bashing California? We have the ocean, snowy mountains, sunny beaches. Mayor of Carmel-Clint Eastwood, Ah-nauld-state governor, Sonny Bono

No problem with the state. I have a problem with some of the polititcians telling the state I live in how to do things. Last time I checked CA had enough problems of there own to fix before getting into Alaska's business.

Plus CA has so many anti-suv, anti-oil drilling, anti-ect groups that come in stick their noses in. I can't stand those people.

The state of CA have some very nice wilderness and other good things. Just some of the people need to go away.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Acid rain, I'm sooo scared.

I work with 50 degree celcius acid baths with a PH of 0.0 all day long.

Tell you a secret about acid rain. If a liquid has a ph of 7.0 it is perfectly neutral. A ph of 6.9 -- it's acid. A ph of 7.1 it's base. Acid rain has a higher ph (more neutral) than the orange juice you drank for breakfast.

Also having had acid burns and base burns, I would much prefer an acid burn. Causes less damage to the skin. Alkalines dissolve skin.

All federal level emission compliance has been taken almost verbatim from CA's legislation. CA spends enormous amounts of dollars to make sure every i is dotted and all the t's are crossed to ensure emission compliance by vehicle owners. Federal fuel tax money is the EPA club used to beat other states into submission to adopt federal emissions legislation. No federal standards? No pork money.

Take a look at the pollution factor of commercial businesses in CA. Any activist will be happy to provide you with the numbers showing pollution by commercial entities has always exceeded vehicular contribution.

I'm not advocating pollution, but not every state/city has LA, Seattle and Denver sitting in natural depressions that collect emissions from vehicles and commercial producers.

CA legislation has provided a very handy weapon for the federal EPA, congress's favorite Gestapo agency, to enact compliance issues without approval or negative political exposure by congress on any unpopular issue. They (EPA) have their own charter and it becomes a simple matter of reading compliance into the record to enact binding legislation. Even the CA .8 driving while intoxicated blood count level was enacted by most states under the threat of EPA withholding federal fuel tax money.

All we're really seeing is a vast and successful effort by members of congress to suborn their decision making responsibilities to federal agencies so that they won't have to face public heat on unpopular issues. CA just happens to be a big gun in the electorial vote count with a population that, through indifference or support, likes the protective shield of big government.

13hondacr,

Some of us take on the anti-suv and other pseudoenvironmental groups on a routine basis.

The oil reserve issues are a LITTLE more complicated than states rights issue, especially the ones on Fed reserve land.
Alaska was purchased originally for natural resources. Mining, oiling, etc are things that has historically drawn migrants there.

76supercab,

What do you work with that has a pH of 0.0? Orange juice if fresh is acidic. Ever here of citrate or citric acid?

Maybe one of our Alaska residents will correct me, but Alaska was purchased from Russia for the same reason we did the Louisiana Purchase and 'territorialized' AZ, CA, NM and TX., because our government had been expansionist minded ever since the War of 1812. Until Gold was discovered in quantity in alaska in the 1890s (at the height of one of America's worst economic depressions), Alaska was referred to as 'Seward's Folly' and considered by most politicians of that time as a complete waste of money.

I always thought it was quite a 'coincidence' that CA achieved statehood a year after gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill and, for all practical short-term purposes, ended Spanish Land Grant claims. But it looks like the Mexicans are changing that yet again.

California has been invaiding my state(Wyoming) for years, cheap houses, building rates, There are more California people in Jackson hole Wyoming that native Wyoming people. You see a lot of them building new homes on the outskirts of Chyenne, and wth is with all those electoral votes..lol j/k. Anyway, we hold a grudge against California and Colorado, because, Colorado likes to come in and use our Lakes and trash them for a weekend, in my town, during the 4th of July 99.9% of the people at the lakes are from Colorado.

BigBlueBeast,

Not all the Greenies come to trash Wyoming lakes. I have been fishing Wyoming for over 20 years now, take pride in leaving the space cleaner than I found it. And yes, I fish for walleye east of Wheatland most of the time. Love it there! And you cowboys seem to LOVE our $$$.

To tell you the truth, the absolute worst group we have had to deal with was on the Fourth of July a few years ago, from Wheatland! Bunch of drunks on 4 wheelers running around the lake, around and through campsites, with no regard for other campers. Ended up the sheriff had to be called several times, and he did absolutely nothing. The property around the lake, east of the power plant, is considered private property, so these fools were allowed to run rampant. Fortunately they left after one night.

Only complaint I have about Wyoming is their driving habit, the left lane seems to be the only lane they are capable of driving in.

Drunk guys riding on fourwheelers.....sounds like some people in Wheatland lol.

Rikfish, the people i am referring too is the your College crowd that comes down and leaves 6 cases of beer worth of empty cans on the shore i have to pick up the next morning.

And thats halarious cuz all of us complain about how you "Greenies" drive like maniacs lol.

Where do u fish?

What lake were you at when those guys came driven around toasted of the 4 wheelers?

The lake most freqently walleye fished over here is Gray Rocks Lake, its about 3 miles from Wheatland.
