1996 PSD - Got intermittant shutting off problems, usally when cold but 2 or 3 times a day when just cruising down the road. It USED TO fire up right away, but now it just quits and won't start for an hour or so.
I have a leaky fuel pump, which I am replacing today - but, to add confusion, I can be cruising on the freeway, put the turn signals on, and the engine will missfire to the beat of the turn signals - this only happens now and again.
It died completely last month - new computer - ouch!!! But didn't fix the intermittant problem. No faults reported on the Ford Diagnostic Computer
If I had to take a shot at it based only on your description in irregular shutdowns I would say change the CPS sensor. Can't hurt, it's old, and a bad one can cause some similar symptoms except for the beat thing, no idea about that. Misfiring to the beat of the turn signals, is that a back beat or a you in d groove kinda beat . It's OK I had Subway for lunch.
Hey Alastair, apparently the turn signals on these trucks are tied in to every other electrical devise on board. About a month ago my truck got to where if I was cruising down the interstate with the cruise control engaged and put on the left turn signal to change lanes, the cruise control would cancel and the engine speed would increase by about 100 rpm (like it kinda half-way downshifted).Well, it stopped that on it's own. Now if I am cruising down the road and turn on the emergency flashers, the engine speed increases just like before (but at least the cruise control doesn't cancel!) Weird system....
My old '73 non computerized Ford feels better to me every time I log on to this computerized site...When I turn on my turn signal, the turn light flashes, nothing else weird..
