460 distributor problem

460 distributor problem

Have a rebuilt 88 model fuel injected 460 with a rebuilt distributor that get so hot it melts the rotor. Paid $3000 for the rebuild-ran 10k miles and knocked distributor gears off twice, found out the bushing was bad in the distributor, bought a rebuilt distributor and the overheating of the distributor started. A shop tried shimming the distributor up off the block but it still has the problems. Any suggestions? I am stumped. Thanks!

Do you know what kind of cam is installed in the engine? You may have the problem because of the wrong type of material for the distributor gear, steal vs cast iron cam. This is a shot in the dark for me at this point without knowing what kind of cam you are running.

All I can think of is alignment of the shaft is somehow off, shearing pins on the original and creating heat in the bushing on the rebuilt distributor. I'd look at the oil pump.
