I have a 1989 Ford F250 with 7.5L 460 EFI engine. I just replaced the distributor with rebuilt one. It has the distributor with the module on the side (no spade connectors, just has 6 small spade connector that connects to harness). My question is: What is the proper timing proceedure for this installation. I realize that the CPU will regulate timing, however, is there a staring point on installing distributor? As it is now, the enmgine starts and runs good, however it takes forever to idle down, and sounds advanced. Thanks- John
You pull out the SPOUT, highlight the timing mark, and hook timing light to number one wire.
Start the engine and turn the distributor to the mark, stop engine and tighten distributor, start engine recheck and readjust if it needs it.
Stop engine, put the SPOUT back in, restart engine and check for advance, if OK stop engine unhook light and you’re done.
The SPOUT (SPark OUTput) is the shorting jumper that opens the SPOUT information from the EEC to the ICM. With it out you are no longer under EEC timing control and you engine runs at Base Timing.
Here is a photo of it on a 1988 5.0. Sorry I do not have one for your engine but it should be in about the same place.
