SCREW AOL!!!!
no doubt, there are others!!
screw compaq, dell and gateway for that matter....they all love aol, and load their computers with tons of crap, such as aol for example! hard to get rid of some of the software on these machines, too! aol and other stuff just pops up everywhere!
whoops! looks like I got off the subject just a bit!......
Yes, get rid of AOL FAST and prey to God that you don't have to close out your checking account or get rid of your credit card like some of my buddies have had to do. AOL is an EVIL, I repeat EVIL company and getting them to stop billing you after you quit can be difficult to impossible or, as I mentioned, require drastic measures. They are the internet cancer of America. There really are good ISP's out there; talk to your friends/nieghbors/coworkers and get a few ideas. Also, do NOT be afraid to ask one of you local providers for a one or two week "test drive" of their internet service. You may be surprised how friendly the GOOD (ie, non big name) ISP's really are
I have AOLver7.0 and it works fine, My mom uses the AOLVer8.0 and never has a problem. We both use dell pentium 4 hardware, with win XP. I suspect you own a gateway or other than dell computer( I think Dell is # 1). I hope you aren't still running win 98??? Win 98 did nothing but crash and freeze.
It may be time to shoot the crippled horse and buy a Dell.
As mentioned, Ad aware will help clean out suspicious crap that can slow you down, but it won't stop things that will lock you up. Also if you share the phone line with the Modem, you may be getting bumped by incoming phone calls, or interference on the phone line.
You should have a Norton anti-virus or McAffee anti-virus running at all times. They both cost about 25 per year. I would try and get a AOL 9.0 it has alot of tools to disable spyware, pop-ups and other spam crap that can hold you up during browsing. Good Luck
Also, DO NOT run AOL with other applications loitering on the desktop. For example; if you were playing a game such as Medal of Honor, or maybe Grand theft auto, you should definetly close those programs before you run AOL. The computer memory and other gadgets can't support two large programs at the same time.
Once again, I reiterate, Road Runner is the way to go. I don't see how anybody can live with AOL spying on you and what you look at while you're logged in. There's none of that with Road Runner.
By the way we have a Gateway, that was my father's choice, he has Dells in his office at work (government computers) and he says that they crash on him all the time and they are just crap.
Compuserve, an AOL subsidiary, still owes me $150 that they swiped out of my credit card account and will not return due to their billing errors. The credit card company was of no help either. Get away from AOL as fast as you can, the other companies are much better. I have been very happy with Earthlink.
-Edit- I don't think there is a safe way to pay them that they can't reach in and grab some money from your account whenever they choose. They have done this to many people and continue to get away with it because of their size. The safest thing to do is just not to do business with AOL in any way.
