Worn out driver's door hinges is the common problem for older Explorers. I can tell you about I-generation (91-94) models, I think that yours II-nd gen has the same issues.
Generally the only right solution is to replace door hinge.
It depends on what hinge is damaged. You could relatively easy replace lower hinge, but not upper. Replacing upper door hinge requires removing dashboard and central panel just to reach the holes in the body, where from you can access the hinge's mounting bolts.
The replacement hinge is relatively cheap. Here in Russia it costs about 20-30 USD per unit at the dealer store. But the work is much more expensive as it requires lots of work putting the door at the exact position when door closes right.
Hope it helps,
With best regards,
Yuri
PS Sport models should be more prone to door hinges damage than 4 door models just because the doors are larger and heavier.
I have replaced both hinges on my '91 and it is doable without removing the dash to replace the upper hinge. It does require patience and a good socket set with extensions and universals. Two people are helpful as well.
If you do a search on this forum you should find some posts on how to replace the pin on the upper hinge. This combined with replacing the lower hinge seems to take care of the problem. You will need to paint the hinge before you replace it.
I am surprised that a 2000 is having this problem. Usually this doesn't occur until Explorers are getting around 10 years old.

My passenger door does this too. The door opens and closes just fine, but it makes a short click halfway through the closing cycle. Mine is a 2000 also, but it does have about 115K miles. The door has been opened and closed many times...
Search...search...search...!
Hey ,My dilema is there is not a reguler bolt holding the hinge . Seeems to be like a flat headed "stud" that goes through the body and screws into a permanet factory welded assembly . Not a bolt ! Nothing I can get a socket on !
Im thinking the only way is to get the grinder out !
Thanks
