My new truck seems to make an odd noise when turning while in reverse. It makes a steady "thump-thump-thump as long as it's turning up while backing up.
Truck info:
'03 F350, CC Lariat, PSD, DRW, 4x4, 8' bed
It has less than 200 miles on it so it's going to the dealer tomorrow but I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of what the dealer might say it is.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Nov-02 AT 08:18 AM (EST)]Check your hubs, because they're probably locked in.It seems that they are delivered this way.If they are locked then unlock them and your noise (normal) will disappear.
Are we sure its coming from the front?
Only in reverse? is it only turning one direction?
do you feel it in the steering wheel or seat of your pants?
or just sound?
any shudder on take of in straight line?
Does the vehicle need to be jacked up to check the half-shafts? I tried to turn them with the wheels on the ground but it didn't look like anything was going to turn like that.
FortyFords,
Actually, it seems like the front left. Haven't had a chance for any to listen/watch from outside the vehicle so I'm really not sure.
I've noticed it in forward once or twice since my original post.
It feels like my F150 did when turning on pavement and in 4WD. Like something is binding.
The only other thing I've noticed is that when traveling straight down the highway, the steering wheel is turned about 4 or 5 degrees to the left when tracking straight. If I turn steering wheel where it's parallel to the horizon, the truck will ease to the right.
I'm guessing this is an alignment problem which I'll get the dealer to address as well.
Maybe the "thumping" is tied to this somehow.
At any rate I'll find out tomorrow and report back.
One simple way to check to see that the hubs are indeed unlocked is to have someone at a safe distance look at the axles where the u-joints are and see if they rotate while you move slowly fwd.or rev.
BTW,I assumed you had the manual hubs. From reading previous posts here it seems as if they are locked as delivered from the factory.
Too answer for Monsta ,No ! it doesn't need to be jack up !
if your hubs are truely unlocked you can reach in and turn the shafts and u-joints to see if there free.

The I'd say your hubs did not unlock. No need to jack it up, as stated before by Forty.
No sense in crawling completely under your truck to turn the front driveshaft. Reach behind the wheel, locate the U-joint, attempt to spin it. If it does not move, rotate the Auto/Lock switch on the hub a few times until you can spin the U-joint. (End on Auto)
