Just got a new 2006 Ranger sport. Noticed a thumping noise when I come to a stop. Drove for a while and then took back to the dealer. Everything is tight.
Couldn't make the noise happen as loud as it did before. They tried other trucks and said they all did that.
So I get the truck back and it doesn't make the noise. Gas tank on 1/4.
I put gas in and now I have thump back.
Hmmmm, wonder if gas is sloshing around when I come to a complete stop.
Any insight??????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????
I did and they found nothing. Said it is same on other trucks they tested.
Got caught in traffic this morning and the sound got worst. Everytime I used the brakes I got noise. Does seem like it is coming from the rear and could be on the drivers side but not sure of that. It's really confusing, could be brakes or anything. I can actually feel it in the cab.
Once out of traffic got moving again at 65 for a while, tank down to half and when got to work noise stopped.
Do you have any idea as to what it could be. Like to give the dealer a hint.
Was the gas tank full when you took it to the dealership? It seems as though the weight of a full tank of gas (~6.25 lb/gal, IIRC) has something to do with whether or not the truck makes the noise.
If you and the service writer were both in the truck and both heard the same noise, and they're telling you it's normal, maybe you should ask them to take you for a ride in another Ranger, to show you that it is...
Just crawled under chassis and nothing seems lose including gas tank.
Rocked truck up and down and no noise, (shocks, springs).
Shook truck sideways and hear lots of play in rear wheels (in and out).
What's rediculous here is that Ford cannot explain what it is especially if it is a common problem to all vehicles (trucks).

I'm thinking along the same lines.
Try and confirm that weight is a factor, and if so, bring the truck back to the dealer with a full tank of gas. And try and set it up so that when you are there dropping your Ranger off, you can grab a Tech or Service Rep and both of you can go for a ride before the truck gets parked in the lot. Insist on it when you get there. Tell them it's the only way to ensure that they are hearing the same noise that you are. After you point out the noise, then tell them you will gladly take a ride in another Ranger with them to see if the same noise is present.
Just to clarify: the noise is a thumping noise (i.e. repetitive) and not a single "clunk" or "thunk", correct?
I have a '06 Sport also and I don't have any thumping noise. What kind of gas mileage do you get? I am getting around 17 in town so far with about 2,000 miles on it.
My 2002 makes a kind of dull thump. when I come to a stop and I concluded it's the gas in the tank only does it when at a certain level of fuel. I think my old 93 Ranger did it too, not quite as bad as the 02.
