Electronic shift on fly
As far as grinding ferrets goes....
if you try. Besides, they have razor sharp teeth - I was bit once by a 6 week old. Needless to say, they're capable of causing injury.I do not do hardcore 4 wheeling, but do go out in the boonies sometimes and I do hit the sand dunes quite a bit. I mainly use the 4x4 for getting me through the sand when needed.
If I were taking this truck off roading all the time, I would probably switch it over to the manual setup.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that the esof system does work for the most part. I guess if it failed me when I needed it I might be a bit upset, but so far it has not.
Oh, I had a dodge that had the shifter on the floor, but the axle engaged with the vacuum thing and that failed once. It actually did not fail, but a tech that had worked on it knocked a vacuum line off and it would not engage the axle.
I still like the convenience though.

I think I wrote something about this. I have an '01 F250 with
ESOF. I had just finished towing a Chevy into my backyard to
work on it, and pulled the SuperDuty into the corner of my
yard. The left front wheel sunk into the ground immediately.
There was a 30 year old garbage pit buried in the ground.
I would have had to dig to get to the hub to lock it. The
axle was down in the dirt.
4x4LOW (yes, the switch) and backed right out.
I could have gotten my hands dirty and turned the hub, no big
deal. but, ESOF helped. And, it went right in.
However, I would have gotten a manual 4x4 if I hadn't found
this one in a dealer's lot.

Glad you were able to get out of your predicament<sp> that's what 4X4 is all about. This is more of a battle of how folks actually use there machines. Some keep 'em in the garage all winter so they won't get rusty, some wash 'em when ever they get a spot of dirt on 'em, some drive 'em all year around and wash 'em about as often. I'm in the catagory of drive all year around through the mud, slush, grundge what ever the wheather folks can thow at me. I do try to wash it once a week to keep the salt off though. The ESOF debacle is more fun than any thing else, but has set off two factions; those that take these big ole machines out and run 'em through there paces and those that baby 'em for what ever reason (ESOF)
. Doesn't matter, as YETI put it so elequently "where alse can you have this much fun for free!" meaning the FTE web site. KOT

Yeti's quote is about the only thing in the message above that has any accuracy to it (zing). I have ESOF, and my truck has probably seen more action since I bought it in April than your truck has ever seen alltogether (zing again). And I have ESOF. Mud, snow, rain, flood, steep inclines, uphill, downhill, on-road, off-road, downhill on 4x4 LO in 1st gear with snow/ice on the ground, cruise control set at 85+ in a high-speed caravan on a clear dry interstate, lumber trails, up a mountain, back down the other end of the mountain, hauling wood, machinery, tools, toys, furniture, pulling stumps, dragging a friend's car, chasing deer in places quads can't even go, you name it. I give her a bath at least every other week; more often when she's salty or she's been running in dirty conditions. But I think I can say that I put my big beautiful girl through her paces.

Oh, and my truck gets a workout, too. ;-) ESOF and all. So if I seem stubborn on my ESOF views, just remember that it does not come unwarranted.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
You do know what I mean on how folks use thier rigs, and there are always exceptions to every rule!
Nice to hear from ya though as always!
On one of the threads that I checked out there were some guys complaining about the hubs not UNLOCKING? There was something said about the hubs being vacuum operated. Don't know for sure.
I have asked some local mechanics about the ESOF and they had not heard of any problems. I might stop at some of the local Ford dealers and check with their mechanics. I don't know if they would be as straight forward as the Mopar mechanics. (My dad bought a Chrysler Cordoba once
with the 318 Lean Burn motor. When he asked a Chrystler mechanic about it, his response was "I pity you"
: Anyway, I still have time left on my lease. Plenty of time to check out the trucks and do some test drives. I wonder if the dealers would mind the mud and scratches
