Electronic shift on fly
That said though, I would like to hear from folks who have the ESOF system. Good or bad, I want to know if this system is problematic.

This feature should more aptly be called ESSOF,Electronic"Sometimes" Shift On the Fly.
Have a nice day:-)

Until ESOF fails me, I will remain true to this feature. Even after it fails me, I'll still remain loyal; I'm really stubborn like that.
To stay on topic, I have 2 questions for you guys:
1) How did the Jeep Cherokees design their 4x4? I had a 1990 (I think; not a Ford so I didn't really pay attention) Cherokee a few years back, and its hubs weren't locked from the outside at all. It did have a lever, with settings for 4Lo, 4Hi, Neutral, and Auto-2/4Hi. Were the front hubs permanently locked, and the lever just engaged the transfer case? If this is the case, why not simply eliminate the hubs on all 4x4's and make them all permanently locked?
2) If you have manual hubs, is there any disadvantage to locking your hubs all the time, 24/7/365, and simply using the lever to change from 2x4 to 4x4?
Seriously, though, I knew NOTHING about hubs & transfer case engagement before I fell into this crowd, but you guys have taught me a lot. Thanks.

Just about positive they use what's known as an axle disconnect.

Current Dodge 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are set up this way.

Reduced fuel mileage and some extra wear on the front axle driveline parts.

Thanks haroutd. I checked out that thread and printed it out so I can read it later. I've gone through a half ream of paper and it's still printing
. Looks like I'll probably be getting out and locking them stinking hubs:-( . The F-150 has electric hubs, I have to assume that that system is not strong enough to handle the torque of the diesels or V10. I guess when I get my new truck that I'll have to quite stroking my dad about having to lock the hubs on his '91 F150
My biggest thing right now is that I want (need) more horse than my 2000 F150 (with the 7700 package) provides. I did some hauling here in Pennsylvania recently and while I was not overloaded (almost to the pound on tow capacity) the 5.4 petered out on the hills. Top speed was down to about 30mph and we're not talking about mountains
. Since the 5.4 only gets on average 13mpg (mostly highway)
I figured my next truck would be a PSD.
The 5.4 is enough of a pig, I aint feeding no V10!
I'm still debating on the options. We'll see what I end up buying in a few months.
2000 F150
7700 package
5.4l 3.73 gears
4x4
standard cab, no toys
Ever had a power window motor fail? Yet the hand-crank onese seem to last forever. You pay for your conveniences this way.
BTW -- I have ESOF and I love it. Others have threatened to remove it while I sleep (thus my 12-guage alarm system
) but I still won't give it up! got those pesky ESOF's and didn't even wake his peacock!
>HeHeHeHe
>got those pesky ESOF's and didn't even wake his peacock!
I'm still picking pieces of that Peacock out of my swampers!!
it was running around half cocked! wait till the next time he tries his esof ! Big suprise!

"All Levers"
right now.Yeti de-feathered the thing so it's good to go!
By the way, don't tell haroutd but I gots a real
good deal on a set of ESOFs.
Any takers!
Remember that female dog?
or was it a ferret?
