My 2001 f250 SD, powerstroke would not start in colorado this weekend. The glowplugs were like disabled. I checked the rely's and they both were making noise but the truck wouldn't even hit. The temperature was around 21F and I took and jumpered the glowplugs to get me going, has anyone else had this problem? It has 63,000 miles on it.
I had to jump from the battery to the lead to the glowplugs, it was like there was no power to the rely, except the rely was making the normal clicking noise. ?
It can still be bad even if it clicks. The easy way is to put a test light after the relay when it's cold and have a freind turn the key on and see if it gets power to the glow plug side.
I'm not sure if you've already fixed the problem, but my guess would have been that it is too cold for the heater box therefore you won't be able to start the Diesel without having the extra optional plug and plugging it in. I believe the glow plug will only start the engine at 28 defrees Farenheit...please correct me if I'm wrong
I have since fixed the problem, the dealer replaced the rely's. As far as the "plugging in question"I have started my truck around 3 degrees F before and had no problems with-out plugging it in. I usally do not plug it in unless it is going to be below 30 F and the biggest reason I do then, is because it's easier on the engine warm up.
I have no problem starting my truck in weather above 10 degs F when I don't plug it in.. I do let the warm up light go out before I try to start it.
The block heater is great and makes it easier. The other nice difference is that the heater warms up faster.
