I wonder if I should buy a new harmonic balancer for the new 4.9L???. I bought a new engine from Jasper and they warn against re-using a Harmonic balancer with worn out rubber components. I have no clue if my harmonic balancer is bad or good. I put 150,000 miles on this engine, and I had no vibrations or other problems with timing or ignition when the engine was pulled. There is a thin ring of rubber (that I can see) that goes through the center of the balancer, it seems to be a little dry and there are small cracks in it.
What is the cost of a balancer? Can they be repaired reliably? How do you correctly install one of these? ( I pound them in, and torque the bolt to spec..but am never sure if I got the thing on all the way) The haynes manual claims that there exists an install tool for the balancer. Is there a performance product I could buy? (other than Ford OEM) Thx in Advance,
It's probably ok to use for now, if the engine was smooth before. Might consider a new one in the future if it's starting to crack. Not sure how much they cost. I use a balancer pully to take off. To put on, I tap them on far enough for the bolt threads to start, and then tighten it up using the bolt to draw it up. Then torque to 80 ft lb's. Shouldn't need an install tool. Just the proper puller to avoid buggering up the balancers when removing. MK
They can be rebuilt for about $45 by a fellow called the "Damper Doctor". You can find him easy with a google search. I spoke to him a couple of times when I swaped a 300 damper to my 240. He was quite knowledgeable. He knew a great deal about modern rubber stuff. I don't doubt that a new or rebuilt unit is better than your old one. Just becuase you cannot detect excessive vibration, does not mean the engine is not being stressed with excessive harmonics.
