I have a 47 4X4 Marmon Herrington conversion I inherited from my dad, he rescued it in 1969 when I was 11. He always double clutched when he would shift, and he didn't grind em to often. I haven't mastered the shift yet either, and if the speed isn't just right I will miss the shift every time. I have the down shifting down pat, you stop shift and go again.

So when you say you double clutch, exactly what are you doing?

Technially it shouldn't grind at all if you shift right and everything is correct. Your trouble may be coming from your clutch, like if it isn't adjusted right or something is worn out. You might check to see if everything seems to moves right without the engine on.

To double clutch you push in, shift to neutral, push in shift to the next gear.

My dad always had old trucks and from listening to him I thought double clutching was required on older vehicles. It had something to do with synchronizing the gears.

I don't double clutch on my 47 and it shifts fine except for down shifting and that is probably just my inexperiance.
