If anybody has a pool that is closed for the winter and you have to empty the rain water off the cover with a pump, get a five gallon bucket and drill holes
all over it and tie the cord to the handle so it doesn't slip out. The holes allow the water to still creep in while keeping leaves and other debris out . I was checking mine out last light and said to myself......."Self you have to remember to post this" so I did. Hope someone can use it.
I appreciate anyone trying to help me with my pool, but I don't understand what you're talking about. Holes drilled in the bucket to let water in- don't they also let the water drain right back out? Help me understand how this really works.
do you drain all the water out of your pool?
if so disregard bucket idea
if not do you drain it about 2 feet?
if so do you have a pool cover on it?
when it rains does it fill with water?
is so I use to just drop a sump pump on top of the pool cover, it worked fine but sometimes little peices of leaves or pine needles would get caught in the prop. so, I got a five gallon bucket and drilled 1/4" holes all over and put the pump in side that, water can get in but debris stays out. get it?
Better than that, build yourself an cover support out of 3/4 PVC and place it in the pool before you cover it. Make it so the center of the cover is off the water and not to low to allow the water to pool on top of the cover. You will never have to drain your cover again.
Side note: either drill holes in PVC to let fill with water or fill with sand and cap off so it will not float.

Okay, your original post didn't say anything about putting the pump inside the bucket. I thought you were suggesting a system that would drain the water off the cover WITHOUT having to use the pump. Sometimes hard to envision stuff here on the 'net. My mistake.
