I have an old wood boiler and I dont know if I should pump the water off the top or the bottom of the tank.Would I have my pump pulling water from the top or would I have it pulling from the bottom of the hot water tank?
What I know about wood boilers could be put on a gnats whisker. It seems as pulling the water from where it is closest to the flame would make sense. The cold feedwater should come in the farthest point from the flame, so the cold water hitting the hot water, wont shock it and cause hammering. Someone will be bicycling along and stop by here soon to tell you whats right.
Back in the day of wooden boats they would steam or boil the timbers to bend them. My dad grew up in this era and says the hottest water is on top due to the fact that hot water moves upward because it is less dense than cold water.
thanks for the replys. That is what I thought also, this boiler will not let the water come out of the higher pipe,it will only let the water go in to the top and not come out.It is like there is a check valve
Your check valve or back flow preventer is installed wrong. Even if you did not have a pump connected. Natural convection would allow the hot water to flow. Circulator should be on the return side and pull the water not push. This is done so gravity aides the pump so it does not have to work so hard. You are not getting the full potential of heat the way it is now hooked up. I am not a heating expert by no means but have installed a few. Hope this helps.
thanks again guys for the info, tewferford is with me on this I think that must be the problem. will get it opened up and look inside for flow valve. Will post back and let you know
