I put up 24 ft. round pool filled it up about 13600 gallons the water was kind of green when it got full. we put less than a half gallon of shock in.In the morning when I went out side to look it has turned red or brown like water from a peat swamp.Does anyone know what did this?or what I can do to clear up the water.

It is probably the iron from your water. The chlorine seperates it out of the water. We bought "metal conditioner" or "mineral conditioner" (I can't remember which name is correct) at Menards where we bought our pool. It took a while until we could get it clear. Only thing is they say you are supposed to wait until the chlorine level is near zero before you add it. Then don't add chlorine for 2 days and don't shock for a week. We had to vaccumm the bottom because all the red junk settled to the bottom. Good luck!!!

The water was green? Ick. Was it from a municipal source or a well? If the chlorine level has to be zero before you add more chemicals and you have a municipal water supply then you'll have to wait a while. Federal regulations require a .2 mg/L chlorine residual at the farthest point in a ditribution system and running almost 14,000 gallons of water would probably bring that level closer to 1.0 mg/L from the "fresh" water in the water lines. Of course, if you used well water, then disregard the previous sentences. As for junk precipitating out of the water, basically you have iron (orange colored) and manganese (black) as your main culprits. I would guess that sucking the sludge out of it would work, but I'm no pool guy, just a water guy.

If you are ever in doubt about adding chemicals. Just take a bag or bottle of water to a pool store and have them check it. They will give you a printout of the correct ratio of chems.
