Unhappy '97 4.6 fault code 401

I bought Autoenginuity software to down load codes and se fault code 200 (not listed in my Chilton's Manual) and fault code 401, Low Flow EGR. Should I just replace the EGR? Is this common? I have driven 67,000 miles nearly troublefree. I love my Ford!

Hi and welcome to FTE.
From the post that I have read here, the sensor, not the valve itself. Do a search for egr and read some of the threads about this problem.

There are several reasons this code can appear. I just fixed my 98 F150 4.6 L 112,000 Miles with the same code. It turned out to be the EGR Ports were clogged with carbon. Disconnect the vacumn hose fron the ERG and cap it. Then apply vacumn (outside source) to the ERG while the engine is idling. If it continues to run smothly the ports are blocked. The engine should stumble or stall if the ports are clear. To clean them you will have to remove the throat from the manifold. The EGR Valve or the PDFE Switch could also be the problem.

You have half the mileage I did but it could still be carbon build up and the test is easy so give it a try and Good Luck

Thanks for the advice. I reset the fault code and passed the emissions test, so I have some time now to dig into the problem.

We don't have the emission test here in South Florida. They revoked it some time ago. Oh Thank You.

I would run the vacumn test anyway. It's simple to do and take you in the right direction for repair.

My truck seemed tp run much better after I cleaned the ports.

Thanks,
Illinois has advanced their emission test to eliminate the exhaust/running test and downlaod only computer info from the OBDII system. It will be the computer that determines if we pass or fail. It takes effect Jan. 1, 2004.

I'll run the test and plan to clean the ports and the tube this weekend while the Bears are getting spanked.
Best Regards

Use a vacuum pump on EGR with engine running, apply vacuum. If engine stumbles than EGR passage in the intake is clear. Replace the DPFE (differential pressure feedback egr) sensor and hoses. If nothing happens than remove the EGR and clean passage of carbon. Clear the code and be done with it. Good luck
