Do the codes read EGR Flow insuficent?? if So it is definately the Dpfe sensor. I was getting thoes codes with my 2000 and the check engine light... replace sensor problem gone. is the truck running bad, or soes it seem to run fine? If it runs fine it is probibly the sensor. If it runs bad it may be the EGR valve. either way not a hard fix...
When I went to purchase my new sensor the parts guy noted that the part had had 3 engineering changes from Ford. Indicating that their might be a flaw with the original... I also noticed that the original was made of Aluminum and the new one plastic. I think there were some problems with the Aluminum corrding...
I too, have just had the 401 code turn on my MIL on my '97 4.0 Ranger SC 5spd manual trans. The truck seems to be running just fine. I cleared the trouble code to wait and see if it recurs. where is the sensor located? Thanks in advance. Tom
The sensor on the 2000 is located at the top front of the intake manifold. It has 2 screws holding it on, and two hoses coming out of the bottom. The two hoses lead to the EGR tube.
Hope this helps....
Also is the 401 & 701 "EGR flow insufficent"? if so this is your fix...
yes,my code is a reccurring 401 "insuffient flow" I have located the sensor (not difficult)with your description. How much does that box cost? Thanks,
Tom
Well, the DPFE was easy to locate and put on. Only trouble is it wasn't a fix. My MIL (code 401)came back on in about 10 miles. Now what? Check the EGR valve? The EGR tube itself? Anyone have a direction for me? TIA
Tom
ps. FYI-cost, 57 bucks for the DPFE.
its possible if you replace the sensor that you might still get the code.. Check for a clogged tube to the sensor, a clogged erg pipe that goes from the exhaust manifold to the EGR, a bad EGR valve, or a vaccume leak some where in the engine....
there are only 2 mechanical parts in the EGR system the Dtpe sensor, and the EGR valve it self.
Ok,I didnt have a vac to check the EGR valve, will do that tomorrow. This truck is in excellent shape, a one owner. nothing has been "butchered up" so this code will just take a bit of tracking down.
ALL info helps! AND is most welcome. Thanks for your time and advice.
I have went to Autozone, bought a MityVac vacuum pump(needed one for the tool box for a long time anyway)$27. My egr valve works fine ,sets a code 402 with the pump applying vac to diaphram. No leak-off apparent indicating a leaky diaphram. The 402 seems to indicate the flow thru the orfice in unrestricted, doesn't it? The EVR,maybe?
The search goes on................

Update: I blew out the EGR tube with compressed air and so far the code 401 has not returned in 300 miles. I think it's fixed. Who knows what a dealer woud have charged for this search. I think the DPFE allowed the exaust flow to slow and then clog the tube.New DPFE and clean the EGR tube(and operate the valve full stroke with a vac pump)apears to have did the trick.
