My CEL came on today so and I got a trouble code P401 " Insufficient EGR flow." The truck is running fine with no issues. Does this mean I need to clean my egr valve?
Yep, basically what that code means is that the computer told the EGR to go to a specific spot and the valve never made it there. Usually this means that the valve is carboned up and not moving properly. So a good cleaning is probably in order
You may also want to consider an SCT with a stock plus tune which deletes the EGR function... It doesn't take too many cleanings/new EGR valves to justify that cost. I see you're in CA so if you just unplug the valve you'll get a CEL.

Thanks 04X. I am planning on getting that sct spartan tune and also completely eliminating my egr system properly next May when my 100k warranty is up. I have a mission to get 500k on my motor and I think that will be the first step to faciltate that goal. Also, my egr valve was replaced 15k ago for what it's worth. I Should have cleaned it at 10k for preventive maintenance.
No problem; I understand about waiting until the warranty period is up, especially if you've got a sticky dealer.
Although running an SCT with Spartan's stock plus tune in it would basically turn off you EGR in the interim and as long as you reflashed the truck and erased the KAM before you went into the dealer for warranty work would be totally undetectable
I think I may just do that. Clean the egr, make sure the CEL does not return after I clear it; if it does I'll take it in for a replacement under warranty. Then put an end to the soot regurgitation with the stock plus SCT. I was hoping the ULSD and CJ4 oil along with diesel Kleen would have made a difference. I guess not in my particular truck.
I had no end of problems with mine, even running good sythetic oil and conditioner in every tank of fuel. The problem didn't go away until I disconnected the EGR and rerouted the crankcase ventilation tube.
