My '81 uses a York compressor which has threaded bolt holes in its flat-top body for mounting. Are there any Ford round-compressors that use mounting ears? Any year/engine? What I'm looking for are the mounting devices/straps/etc. for that type compressor mount that I can adapt to use an ear-mount compressor. Thks.
Exactly. I ran into a good deal on a new 12v unit. My York is 14+yrs and the OEM unit from '81 lasted 15yrs so I'm getting ready. If I can adapt the new round compressor....great. If not, I'll have to buy a reman York instead.
What I would do is go to autozone or somewhere like that, and keep looking up compressors, going up year to year till you find one that is round. Then you will know what year truck's to look for to get the correct brackets. I would not be surprised though, if you have to get new custom hoses made also to make it fit. You might be better off getting one like you have.
That is a plan. I suspect this compressor would fit most cars. Looks a lot like my Cad compressor except my Cad compressors' service ports are in the end of the body opposite the pulley. I think I'll just put it up for sale instead of doing a bunch of engineering. It's a universal-fit, so maybe someone can use it. It's good for the use of either R12 or R134a. New units need to have the correct oil installed first, depending on which refrigerant is used. Hoses: I will rebuild them when my York bites the dust. 29+yrs service is good enough for me. I intend to continue it being an R12 system.
If you do find a good solution for putting a newer rotary compressor in place of the York, please come back and let us know the details. My York compressor is getting ready to go - it sounds like a bucket of loose bolts being shaken when I run the AC. I want to do a similar swap. I have just started looking at parts. If I find something that works, I will let you know.
Jim....(the short-bed signature aside)....I'm hoping to get another year/more out of my York. Hopefully I can find someone who can use the new TM-15HS compressor in the meantime. I think the new unit could probably replace an FS6, but I really haven't gone into it that much so it's just speculation on my part. When my OEM unit started making those 'loose bucket of bolts being shaken' sounds, a union brother who knew auto ACs, added a small can of R12 oil charge, which did the trick as to quietening it down. Lasted another 2-3 yrs, until it became grossly terminal. Those years gave me the chance to learn auto AC.
