Anybody recognize this part?

I have a 1994 Ford F350 with a 5.8 that I’m trying to get running. Has had the same gas in the tanks for 10 years and was running rough with a moderate load. I suspected fuel problems so I drained both tanks, replaced both fuel pumps and filter. Checked fuel pressure at the rail and it was 30-40psi. Decided to change the fuel injectors as well. Still running rough. Changed the plugs, wires, cap and rotor, ignition module and coil. Still running rough but not throwing any codes. It started leaking at the oil cooler so I removed the cooler, installed new lower hose and installed Napa 1515 filter. Leak fixed. Then I noticed the EGR valve not functioning. Ordered a new valve, position sensor, and vacuum regulator (which was shorted) and haven’t installed yet. Have not checked the timing and advance yet.

Then I noticed this small part on down on the frame close to the oil filter. Knowing everything I replaced, does anybody recognize this part? I’m thinking the ignition advance isn’t working and this part has a function. Any help from the group would be appreciated.

That is a quarter built in 1988. If you have a bunch of them, you can buy something.

Looks like a woodruf key for the damper or crank timing gear! Did someone forget to put it back on???

Agree that’s what it looks like but nothing other than what I mentioned above was replaced. After looking around again today, because of where it was, thought it may be something from the steering shaft, but don’t think so. Still fighting this fuel or ignition problem and was hopeful this may have been a factor. Thanks

The old ones had one of those in the AC compressor hub
No such varmint in your 1994, your AC clutch hub is splined
It does not go in any of the steering shafts pr joints
You been working on any Briggs and Stratton lawn mowers lately?

Thanks for your feedback. I’m thinking the part may have been there for years and nothing from this truck. So back to this ignition or fuel problem. For the fuel, I flushed both tanks, replaced both pumps, replaced the fuel filter. Planning to also replace the fuel pressure regulator (pressure was a bit on the low end). For the ignition, replaced plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor, coil, and ignition module. Replacing the egr valve, sensor, egr vacuum regulator, and MAP sensor tomorrow. As I replace these, I verity continuity from the PCM to the sensor connector and correct voltages and resistances.

I suspect it will still have the problem under load and plan to verify fuel pressure while driving and then finally get around to checking the timing at idle and higher rpm. I’m suspecting the PCM advancing the timing or the wiring from the dist to ignition module to PCM.

It wouldn’t hurt to pull the computer and look at the board. Peace of mind either way.

Thanks. Yes, that’s what started my project. Turning on the key I didn’t hear the fuel pump kick on. After checking with a meter it lead to the computer. I pulled it out and discovered all 3 of the electrolitic capacitors were faulty and leaking on the board. I removed them, cleaned and verified the tracks on the board, and put new ones in. That fixed the fuel pump issue but the board may still have other issues. Should have everything else verified this week and will likely be ordering a refurbished computer. Thanks for your recommendation and I’ll keep you posted on outcome.
