Pump nozzle problems

Hello, wondering if anyone else has this problem or if anyone has had this problem and solved it. I have a 1975 F250 dual tank set up. When trying to fill the tanks with a modern pump, I am in California, it is very difficult to get gas in the Truck. Pump nozzle does not seal well, spills gas everywhere, on the ground on the truck on the paint. I need to put it in very, very slow slowly and it still spills out regardless of trying different angles with the nozzle. This happens with both tanks. Seems to me that they are just built for the old school pump nozzles. Does anyone have any idea what is going on or how to solve this problem? Thanks a lot.

Put the nozzle in completly upside down. NOT KIDDING. Do your knozzles out there have the black flex tubeing over the nozzle? If so push it up and away from the nozzle tip. And see if you can use the outer fill neck to hold it back. You also can NOT go wide open and lock on and hope for auto shut off.

Yes black heavy duty rubber all around. I’ll try it up side down. I don’t mind the slow it’s the spilling all over the paint that pisses me off. Thanks for the tip. I’ll try it next time.

Sorry forgot to mention. Look where the metal fill neck pipe piece changes to a rubber hose and goes inbetween the bed floor and on top of the frame. Does that area looked collapsed? Does it have the metal U shapped plate on it? Might be time for a new rubber piece.

Does you have a vent pipe on the side of the fill neck? 100% it is not clogged? How does it look, maybe also collapsed and time to change it too.

I fought the issue for years, and gave up after changing everything. Now I fill gas cans and dump them in. The new pumps need a pressure relationship that the older vehicles (read Ford truck here) just cant match

I have an in-cag gas tank and I HATE it. Almost as bad as I hated the Selectro hubs that came on the truck.
Seems like CA ruins everything.
I've never had any issues filling any of the gas tanks in either one o fmy old Ford trucks.
Once in a while when filling my tank it overflows just as the nozzle shuts off.
No big deal but it is annoying.

Thanks for the replies. All good food for thought. I was wondering if there is any kind of extension? Or old style nozzle with a filler ring on it, that can be fitted into the tank opening when filling, that the new pump nozzle can fit into? Kind of like an adapter that will go further into the tank? Also then if it spits up, it’s away from the body of the truck and the paint. Or some other type of adapter?

It's been a problem since they were new, the nozzle might contribute to the problem but it's mainly because of a bad design by Ford.

Get about a 12" piece of clear vinyl hose and slip it on the nozzle so the gas gets far enough inti the filler not to puke back.

I don't recall an instance of spillage / overflowing in my '77 since I just settled on using the low or maybe medium speed latch at nozzle and go clean a glass or mirror or just watch my surroundings, etc. I used to try high speed, but even some cars will make a mess then.

I'm right there with you, I hate how Kalifornia could screw up a ***** sandwitch, yes, on our old truck here when filling up, I usually put it in and use the slowest setting, THEN when I think it's getting close to Full, stop it, use 2 fingers to hold the black scrunchy rubber hose back and fill the rest of the way till you hear it gurgle. Saw another guy in town had like a 1/2" or 3/4" piece of plywood he had cut like a large open end wrench (if you can picture that) that he would slide under the nozzle so the vapors/pressure could escape (yes, this defeats the whole purpose of the stupid addition to the nozzles) I have yet to make one since I'm so used to just doing it the way I've been doing it LOL.

Been awhile since I put gas in my 76 with a newer type nozzle and it was a struggle so now I have 4 five gallon gas cans that only contain ethanol free gas that I use strictly for the lawnmower, pressure washer and the truck. The containers have a real nice flexible Tygon type hose that fits nicely inside the fill neck on the truck.
