Problem at the gas pump!

Has anyone out their having issues filling up the tank on their 1973 Ford F-250. Specifically on style side bed, with flush mounted fuel filler.

My issue simptoms, fuel spills out when trigger is depressed all the way and fuel pump nozzle fully rested on filler neck.

I had this going on since truck was purchased, I live in California not sure if pump nozzles are different in design that might be causing this issue.

Not sure if it's supposed to do that or not, but mine spits on occasion too. I live in oregon and we don't pump our own gas, but I always have to tell them to use the first notch on the nozzle to flow slower so it doesn't make a mess.

Yes with the EVAP nozzles this is a huge issue. Either use the nozzle upside down or pull back the evap nozzle while filling. Most states don't use these nozzles.

I remember hating filling '70s F-series trucks back when I worked at filling stations in the late '70s. I couldn't leave the nozzle unattended because of gas spillage. Had to hold it and monitor it the whole time.

When I have my '73 painted later this year, I'm considering cutting out the bed side and adapting a 1980s-1990s F-series fuel filler (with door). Much easier to deal with.

It's been a problem since they were new.

cut a foot or so of hose, 1" as I recall and stick it in the tank a ways and fill through that. we hung one in the gas house because they all needed it.

The first thing I would do is make sure the filler hanger clamp is on. Sometimes the mount under the bed floor will rust off, or clamp left off for some reason. If that's ok then I would start looking into how your tank is vented.

Won't work on EVAP nozzles. If you block the orifice at the tip of the nozzle the pump shuts down. The evap nozzles pull vacuum at the same time you fill. If you don't make a seal it won't flow, this is why often you have to defeat the nozzle by pulling back on the vapor recovery portion.

I think they are only in use in about 6 states now. They purge the vapor back to the tank and use a coaxial hose. The have a lot of lot tampering features built in which makes cheater hoses, old vehicles and gas cans a joy to fill.

From the manufacturer

This nozzle includes the no-seal, no-flow interlock mechanism and automatic shutoff for reliable, safe operation. It also has an internal pressure shutoff to detect vapor blockage.

Well snap - I just made a post with the same issue without first seeing this post... no wonder no one replied to mine haha! I am having the same issue with my 75 - also in California. It does seem that if I rotate the nozzle 90 degrees and keep it at half flow, it will be ok (but takes forever). I have not tried upside down... suppose that's something to try out.

Last time I was in California was in 1981. Some of the stations must have been trying out a primitive version of vapor recovery. The contraption on the hose nozzle was about the size of a toilet plunger and it wouldn't fit into the fuel filler door opening. After about 5 minutes of fiddling around I had managed to get a gallon in. Drove to another station that wasn't experimenting. I imagine you have no choice now though.

Does it have to seal? I somewhat remember you just had to pull it back while pumping, but that was many many years ago.

Not sure about the evap fillers, but with the regular ones I just clock the it about 90 degrees (basically sideways) and start to fill slow, but build to full.

It's supposed to kick the flow off if it doesn't seal. However pulling back just right does defeat it if done right.

Since I purchased the truck, the technique I've been using- is to distance the nozzle from the body enough so I can pull back the plastic splash Gard. Even that causes some fuel too splash out and I'm not even pressing the trigger all the way. That might be the vacuum that ford390gashog talked about as many of you did also. I haven't tried fueling with the nozzle up side down, I'll give that a shoot. If not I'll just pull the plastic splash Gard more or just weld in a newer style fuel filler from a late model Truck/SUV. Thanks for the knowledge and time
