Electric tailgate release not opening

Lately, pretty regularly, but not all the time, my tailgate won’t open on the first try. I hear the mechanism cycle but the gate doesn’t open. H as be to wait a couple of seconds and push the button again. It always drops on the second try. Annoying. I’d really prefer a locking old school handle release, but does anyone have any idea how to remedy my issue? Maybe coincidence, but seems worse on rainy days.

I sounds, to me, that the tailgate is in a slight bind. After pressing the button the first time, can you manually open the tailgate. I have found a bind can happen and a small adjustement to the tailgate will work.

Nope, can’t manually open it. It’s still latched. When I push the button again it pops open like it should.

Sounds like the internals are out of adjustment. I haven't opened one so I don't know how to adjust them, but something is binding up and the second actuation gets it past it. It'll likely only get worse if something isn't done now.
