Well my tailgate wont open for some reason, the latch wont work. I thought it might be locked so I tryed to unlock it and it had no affect. Anyone know how to get it open?

Sounds like I might have an excuse for an 08 tailgate.

 

My work truck does the same thing I have to just pull up on one corner of the handle to make it open for some reason if you pull up on the middle it does not unlatch the tailgate. Don't know if it will work for you or not. But who does not want a good reason for an 08' tailgate I say it is time for a new one...

 

Mine sometimes sticks and it is a matter of grabbing the handle all the way over on the drivers side of it and lifting hard. Seems like some times there is to much play in the plastic to get enough pull on the rods inside to get it to release. Maybe it will work for you.

 

On the inside at the top of the tailgate there is an opening where the latch is. You should be able to stick a screwdriver in there and push the locking mechanism down to get it to unlatch. probably take two people. One for each side at the same time. If it's stuck in the lock postion with the key....BFH??

Remove the access cover plate and take a look. You should be able to do this with the tailgate up.

I would say it would be a good reason for an 08 tailgate but you still have to fix it to get the tailgate off :-p.

 

It's funny, just yesterday I was working on my truck and my dad was fooling with some firewood. He comes into the garage and gets the sledge hammer and goes back out starts frailing the chit out of the tailgate on a '79 f250. I stood there and watched(LMFAO) and after he gets it beat open he takes it off and throws it in the junk. He goes up on the hill into the junkyard and gets another one off another truck and puts it on. Later I asked him why he took the BFH to it and not open it with a screwdriver and he said "I had gotten tired of doing it that way." Yeah, that's how we roll!

Chris, check your handle for a crack. Mine is stubborn as all hell to open at times due to a crack that runs horizontal to the handle. It flexes open when I pull the lever and makes it real hard to turn the cam inside. We need tough metal handles on these SD's.

 

Thanks for all the repies. After posting this I remember about the access panel on the back lol

I just sprayed it all down with WD40 and it opened up.

EDIT: Hey Ryan where ya been bud? Mines not cracked but it does flex a ton.
