2004 F350 6.0 engine dies when battery cable removed

Hi all,
Im new here, so if I dont follow some rule or protocol, forgive me...
My issue is this: My truck starts fine and runs fine...I was tightening up the battery cables, and in the process, the negative cable came off, and the engine died. Naturally, I thought my alternator must be bad, because if it was good, the engine wouldnt die. I just had the alternator checked and its good. Someone mentioned maybe the battery is bad....but if that was the case, a good alternator would still run the engine, no ? Thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Not recommended to do this type test with all newer electronics

That’s an old school bush test for a gasser vehicle

Why are you removing a battery cable while it’s running? Just for fun? These platforms are sensitive to voltage swings/ dips.

It wasnt intentional...I was just tightening up the battery cables and it came off...and the engine died...which led me to that conclusion. Thanks.

I would have to look at my truck, but It shouldn't have shut down being it's got the dual batteries. That would be assuming factory terminals and all other connections good

Agreed. That's why I'm asking about the terminal.

Then you’ve got wiring issues. There are three connections that should kept it running. The 8ga negative from the passenger battery is the main, but there are two bonding cables that should have been enough to supply a good current path. There is one between the frame and the body under the passenger footwell, and a second bonding cable is from the back of the passenger head to the firewall above the heater box.

Thank you again, for your reply. Turns out....a rookie mistake! I re-tightened all the batter terminals...and bingo, that was the problem. Sometimes, when something is so simple, you dont think about it, because the problem seems bigger than that. anyway, all fixed, thanks again

If your truck can still shut down when the passenger negative terminal is removed from the battery, no, you haven't solved the problem.

engine stays running

That definitely was the problem. The engine stays on now, when I disconnect the terminal. I have battery shut offs on both batterys, so it was easy to test. Thank you again.
