I'm going to remove my air pump. Most of it makes sense to me, however this hose in the back of the engine (circled in red), is that a check valve? Meaning I can just remove the hose and don't have to remove the valve and the hose that goes to the engine?
Yes. It is a check valve. The air injection system pumps air into the exhaust to help get the converter faster. You do not want hot exhaust gases to flow up that hose toward the air pump. I’m not sure what you’re saying. What is your reason for removing the air injection system?
You could do what my PO did… cut the metal tube going into the cat about 4” back, then hammer what appeared to be a broom stick inside it and cover the end with JB weld. I was going to hook it back up, so I cut the end with jb weld off thinking I could reattach it. That’s when I found the broom stick. That’s also when I said screw it and removed all of it but the pump. That just recently got removed also.
Not sure on the 460, but on my 302, they were easier to get to from laying underneath looking up behind the cylinder heads on each side.
Great. I'm going to give this a shot tomorrow. I'm hoping I can get to that bolt instead of leaving the check valve. The big blocks though, do take up significantly more room in the engine bay. This is one of those times where a small block would be a benefit! 😄
Replaced about a hundred so far
Bolt removal
It's done by "feel" from up top
Same with the tube replacement with the new one way valve
They get replaced from the top
There is a reason it costs 200 bucks to get one replaced
