Does anyone know how the air pump hoses route? One hose goes to a large canister and the other goes to a thing that looks like a large black valve of some sort. The canister has a hose coming off the side that is open and just hangs there and the top of the valve thing has a open end to it. The hose coming off the side of the canister is the intake, I can feel the air sucking in on, the valve is a outlet. I just don't think they should be open like they are.
Smog pump and all the system components should be listed on the under-hood diagram (decal) which shows exact location and routing of hoses, and other components. It differs slightly from certain years. In other words Ford didn't always make changes to the system or the routing but to be certain, check the decal on your particular truck. It may be different than a truck built a few years earlier or later.
The black valve is called the "combination bypass / diverter valve" and it directs airflow from the pump to the exhaust system. One of its ports goes to the crossover tube on the back of the heads, and the other goes to a port on the Y-pipe just upstream of the second cat. Both go thru a metal check valve which connects the rubber hose to the metal tubing.
The canister on the R wheelwell is the intake filter for the air pump.
