I didn't even look at the back to see the size. all of the bearing and journals have a distinct groove where a burr or trash was left exactly where the oil passage is.
Yes, pumping trash through the oiling system is a concern. good luck with the block work. i have ran several 400s and have been very happy with them for a truck engine, once you tear them down and fix the problems, get them oiling good, do whatever is available to raise the compression, some. get them timed right, where the ignition and advance are actually advancing right, timing has made the biggest difference on a 400 than any other engine I have ever owned, other than a diesel engine. The long stroke is my thoughts on that, the piston is moving faster to get to the same place therefore timing is more sensitive. I ran a cooler plug heat range and was able to gain about 2* or so timing and that made a noticeable power difference as well as the vacuum came up a bit.
But a lot of people say a 400 is nothing more than good enough to hold your boat in the same place and 460 is where its at no matter what, and swap a 460 to solve the problems. I do work my trucks, hauling fuel, oil, farm work, firewood, pull a boat, and I get along with the 400 ok and the 460 ok, I don't really have a love affair with either one. The 400 is a bit easier on fuel, and in hot weather the 400 seems to take a bit more to overheat with a big radiator, the 460 will heat a bit while working hard and also idling around the farm fueling equipment or picking up rocks or putting pipe and tubes out the 460s have tended to build heat at idle often times, rev it and it cools down but the 400 with a bigger radiator tends to let me idle around perpetually. All what you want it to do. I have been driving a ford ranger this spring and it has done a good job until I need to pull something. the big diesel tank in the back looks like a little much however .

There is nothing inherently wrong with the 400 other than Ford having 4 small block Blocks (302/351/cleveland/400) plus the BBF. Somehow Pontiac made it with one block.
The 351m/400 and BBF had the c6 bellhousing, starting fresh the BBF is a no brainer. No one build power would start with a 335 block when 385 blocks are everywhere.
The 400 is at a new shop. the first shop decked it .020" and because of piston choices during Covid it is bored .040.
Whoever chamfered the crank did not debur or polish?? resulting in it eating my rod bearings. I have some journals with a significant groove.
Anyway,, if a hone can clean up my .040 without boring i will buy new pistons. I do not know how much my crank has been turned. First shop gave me no paperwork. One of those deals where you just happy to get it back..
I did pick up 2 M blocks with week.. If i need a crank and pistons, I will build a 521 and sell my trickflow heads and cam package.
Chris
What do the main bearings look like ? That trash might have been pumped down from them.
main bearing look decent,, i think the rod journals were not touched after chamfer. Hopefully this week i will have some data.
My hope it the block is only decked .010. I will buy 13cc DSS piston and let them ride .010 out and use a .047 gasket.
If anyone here needs a 335 or 385 block i have 2 of each. Also,, might let my 62cc Trick flow heads go and purchase 72cc and run flat tops?
If anyone wants my Tmyers Pistons, buy me a beer and they are yours,
