Hi all, I have a 1997 E-450 with a 7.3, E4OD, and ZF driveshaft e-brake that doesn't work. The vehicle is a former Red Cross ERV, and based on what the last shop said, someone removed the drum brake pads because users kept smoking them. I'm hoping to remove the entire ZF parking brake assembly, as it is impossible to put new shoes on while the unit is on the vehicle (see video
). The unit I have on the vehicle now is a F7U3-2598-AB with u joint straps on the output and the holes for the transmission VSS:
I purchased a working ZF driveshaft e-brake that came from a 1995 F-Super Duty for $100 (less than the cost of the rebuild kit), but didn't pay attention to the difference in unit number, and while this unit has a hole for the transmission speed sensor, the face plate does not indicate that there is a drive gear within, nor is there a mounting hole to hold the sensor onto the brake assembly.
I obviously want a speedometer and don't want to risk causing issues with the transmission. But here's where things get interesting: there is also a speed sensor on the rear differential. So my question to all of the E4OD experts: can I rely solely on the differential mounted VSS and use my non-VSS brake assembly without issue, or do I need to shell out the extra $$$ for the right AB unit? Thanks in advance.
