Transmission adaptive learning

Not sure what has changed. Lately my truck will shift from first to 3rd to 5th and then instantly back down to 4th and eventually it'll shift to 6th and so on. It almost seems like the moment it shifts into fifth it realizes the speed and load is too low so it down shifts to Fourth. I would think it would shift to Fourth from 3rd if that's the situation

Does resetting the Adaptive learning change anything? If I remember correctly I can disable adaptive learning via forscan?

The transmission shift tables need some major tweaking in my opinion. The transmission is great when I put it into tow mode but that is more wear and tear on the trans and the loss in mileage

Reseting the tables would force the transmission to relearn and would be the first thing I would do post warranty. I would try turning off the AL if my truck was out of warranty; until then Ford owns it.

I love the truck but truly detest the transmission and the constant lugging of the motor. It doesn’t do the drivetrain any favors.

Not sure what truck you have nor amount of miles. Also is this during towing or just with the truck itself? Do you tow or carry heavy loads?

My first thought would be check transmission fluid level. 2nd: I would change the fluid and be sure to use correct fluid during refil.

If the above does not improve the shifting perhaps resetting the AL, if possible, so the truck can re-learn.

Start with the easy stuff then go from there. If under warranty I would bug the hell out of the dealership first thing.

Good luck,

Mike

You should still be under the powertrain warranty.

I got the same answer with mine NPF (No Problem Found). That is the main reason I bought the extended warranty. In my case the problems continue so I am thinking about trying another dealer.

Not true. I had a couple issues similar to yours. Took it to the dealer for diag with no codes and they found the trans was 1.5 qts. low. They filled then reflashed the trans under warranty, I'm still not really thrilled but it's better. At 50k miles I thought the pan should have been pulled and inspected but they wouldn't go for it. I did call Ford corporates service and got a claim number for whatever that's worth..

I would go back to the dealer and tell them the problem is still there. Every time you bring it in they log the service into the Ford system. This will help you in the future being you can prove it’s been in more than once for the same problem.

I had a similar problem with a 2013 Ford focus I bought brand new. The car had horrible transmission problems due to the new DCT (dual clutch transmission). Throughout 3-4 years I dealt with it and racked up about 150,000 miles on it. However, I must’ve brought it in 6 or more times for them to rebuild the transmission. Finally, the dealership, a different one, said you probably have a good case for a buy back, essentially the “Lemon Law”.
The service manager commented that being it was brought in so many times and there is a record of it that I had a good chance of getting somewhere further than a rebuilt transmission over and over. Turned out Ford bought it back from me $1000 less than I paid for the car brand new in 2013. Turned out to be a pretty good deal having brought it in and having them record it was the key. A few times when I brought it in they would say that was normal the way it shifted. Ya right felt like whiplash coming out of a dead stop.

Good luck…hopefully they can fix yours.

Mike
