The truck saga continues. The one-man shop I took the truck to doesn't want to work on it and gave me the name and phone number of a different shop. He said he can't duplicate the problem of running rough sometimes after using silicone to fix the connector so he is not going to keep driving it around trying to get it to show up. He is not charging me for the work he did and suggested a different shop look at it. So, I will pick it up today and concentrate on getting a catalytic converter for it.
Jim has anybody put this truck on a computer diagnostic and run any tests ?, it sure seems like most of these mechanics are doing the bare minimum to resolve the issue, has the coil pack been replaced with new ?, have they been moved around or does the problem stay at one cylinder, I personally wouldn’t put a new cat in until the main problem has been fixed .
just my 2 cents worth , sorry no penny’s 5 cents .
I think the cat would be the major problem, since this is commi -fornia and they want an arm and a leg for them here. The scan sheets I have say it needs a cat, and Ignition Coil "D" control circuit open. On the way home from the shop, I noticed the CEL light was off. So, I am guessing he reset the codes.

Cats are expensive because there is a booming mini-industry in ripping them off of vehicles. Shortage = expensive. Cats are required in all 50 states.

True but another thing that makes them expensive is the fact that they have to be CARB compliant. Most of the cats sold on eBay are 46 state compliant. If I didn't live in California, I could get one as cheap as $120, but a CARB compliant one is $560.
Smog and Catalytic Converters are only required in city’s and over populated small towns like Manteca , register your truck in Sonora or above , we don’t require smog or cats in our county but lane county does and that would be Eugene and maybe Salem.
and we have a two year registration, my truck was $200 vs $800 + smog , California punishes people with trucks so they Add a commercial plus weight Tax, so glad I threw in the towel.

I remember Oregon only having smog testing in two counties back in the day, I "think" it was Medford and Portland but could be wrong. My brother lived in Madras, Oregon the final years of his life and he never had to smog test his car. I also remember you could get a 1,2-, or 4-year registration back then. Not sure if that is still possible today. California would never do that. Luckily for me, the Dodge Stratus my brother owned was originally sold in California so it had all they extra CA mandated smog equipment on it. Made passing the smog test easy.
When I first registered my truck, I got lucky and the DMV person took the commercial and weight tax off because my scooter lift back then was mounted in the bed. I was told it was a one-time deal for disabled placard owners. I checked O'Reilly and the coolant temp sensor will cost me $120, almost the same cost as the registration ($166). The cat will be about three times that if I get one off eBay. I need to call some local muffler shops and find out what it will cost to install it.
as we slide into January ( Jim Hint hint ), I want everybody to be safe , our world has gone bats#!t crazy , I don’t wish harm upon anyone so leave the ice alone , don’t confront them , don’t yell obscenities , just go on about your business and you’ll have a great day
Hi Tim. No idea regarding Rob.
04badford no worries. I only know one ICE agent and he used to go to my church. He switched churches due to his kids not liking the youth group there.
