I think i know the answer but just to make sure, i measure the resistance on my VSS at 1800 OHMS. Having a code 452 for VSS and hard ,hanging shifts. does this mean i need a new VSS ? Current one is oem ford. Speedometer works fine. ABS light has been on since i got the van about 100,000 miles ago. Bad shifting has been intermittent for several years. Thanks,Bob.

Reason: more info.
You better run through the testing sequence for code 452
Might be a problem with the PSOM
Put year and rest of particulars in your post
That resistance measurement looks within spec to me without checking in to it further
Those pinpoint tests will have you ohming out the wires and verifying AC voltage output of the sensor, back and forth from the PSOM
Thank you sir. I was hoping you would find this post. At this point i'm gonna do the unthinkable and just throw a new PSOM at it for about $150 bucks. Electrical tests are not my strong suit. I did replace 2 capacitors and one varistor in the current PSOM and it worked well for about 900 miles. Then the shifting went back to acting up as before. Haven't pulled the PSOM back out yet but will in the next couple of days. See what it looks like. Anyway i'm pretty much fed up with this problem and if the new PSOM doesn't fix it i'm going to scrap the van. 1995 E-150 with the 5.8. I'll post up with an update later. Thank you again, Bob.
Not the unthinkable
Hell, some of the Ford stuff says to substitute a known good part
That's what some of us did with RABS valves and MAP sensors, TFI modules
I still have an interval governor that is a known good part in my tool box for testing the early intermittent wiper systems
Well, finally got the chance to test the new PSOM . Worked great for all of 30 miles. Then straight back to the same symptoms. I'm a bit disappointed but not surprised. On the other hand, i've got nothing but good things to say about Module Mechanics in Colorado. They sent my module back looking like brand new. Excellent communication too. Hate to do it but the van is going straight to Marketplace now for what ever i can get out of it. Thanks for the responses to my questions.
The speedo is the least of your worries
That is why the speed sensor signal goes to the ABS brakes first (safety), PCM second (so it runs) and speedo 3rd or last because knowing how fast you are traveling is the least of your worries
Granted you need a speedo, but not worth selling the truck over IMO
