e4od speedometer gear question

hi thanks everyone for your posts,,i was wondering if i can put a e40d from 97 e350 truck into a 92 ford motorhome originally with a e4od also both 460's,, the 92 has the speedo gear cable mounted on the tail end of the trans ,,do the newer e4od have it in the axle or near the abs speed sensor, will i have problems with the computer?I am looking on one in ebay but i can't tell if there is an opening for the speedo cable gear in the 97 e4od picture,,anyone with info? suggestions?,,thanks

The 94(at least) and newer E4OD appear to have the speed sensor on the rear axle. It also feeds tha ABS.

At least this is the way my 94 F250 E4od is.

Good Luck,

Thanks Jim,i don't have abs,or any speed sensor on the axle 1992 model,, I assume the newer e4od will probably not work with the old 92 ecm, wonder if mine has an internal speed sensor and what modifications i can do to use the newer trans,,

I have read that the early E4OD did have a normal speedometer hook up on the tail of the tranny as yo have seen, but since I have never looked at any other F250, I can't say more.

A wild guess would be that perhaps the fitting is still on the newer E4OD casings, so the question would be, is there still a gear inside the tranny to drive a speedo? Or can the speedsensor/ABS be adapted to drive your normal speedo? The Speed sensor on the 94 and newer axles is electrical so a cable drive at least directly is not doable.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

My 98 F-250 with an E4OD has a regular Speedo hook up on the tail shaft of the transmission.

thanks everyone,my main question now is does your newer e4od send speed data to the computer, from the gear in the tail? or from a rear axle sensor?,i guess mine only receives data from the speedometer gear,i ordered a atsg service guide yesterday on ebay, hopefully it will specify the changes
