Hey guys, I just started having some trouble with my 1997 f-350 7.3 with the E4OD transmission. My transmission started slipping, so I got a rebuilt one to put in. I just got it all buttoned up today and went to start the truck and a terrible grinding noise happened after the truck was running. Upon further inspection I noticed it was the starter not disengaging. I thought it was a bad starter selinoid so I went to town and bought a new starter. They told me there were two different types of started for this year. A longer skinner one and a shorter fat one. I know nothing about the short fat one and have always put in the longer skinny ones, I’m not sure what the difference is. I put the new starter in and still having the same issue, I start the truck and the starter will not disengage. If I manually turn the fly wheel the opposite direction that it normally turns the starter teeth disengage. But when I manually turn it the correct way they slowly start to re engage. Because they are still slightly in. I’m not sure if it’s something I did incorrectly while putting the new transmission in or what the deal is. I checked all wiring connections to ensure there was no little amount of power making the starter stick out more then normal but still have the same luck. Do these things happen over time and the starter just needs to be shimmed? Is the “shorter fat” starter any different then the one I have in now?
Any help would be great, thank you
