I need to rebuild the flatdeck on my 53 F600. I was hoping to replace a crossmember in the existing deck and replace the deck boards but sadly, this won’t work for hauling hay. When you put a 1700-2000 lb bale on one side, the old wooden deck flexes too much and the bale falls off before I can get another one on the other side to balance it out. The nails are all loose now from trying.
I'm going to replace it with a steel frame deck but I want it to look period correct. I’ve looked on Pinterest and there is on design on a 54 GM that speaks to me. It also has a headache rack, which I will need.
This is and will be a work truck. It has a tilt mechanism as it was a grain truck for much of its life. The frame will likely be made from 4” channel with crossmembers on 24” centers. I have a bale rack that I will put on for hauling bales.
It needs to be functional but also look somewhat original.
Please post some ideas.
PS. I will keep it to myself how fast it will go. IYKYN 😎
Here's my build pretty much start to finish. It's a flat deck built on an Anthony hoist. The result is flat deck that converts to a box. Add car ramps and there is almost nothing you can't move or dump.
Thanks very much. I tried to keep it as original as possible with no access to oak. The old deck was pretty well done including the ends of the timbers. I used pressure treated lumber available locally, copied dimensions and was even able to find the hardware with the classic square nuts in SS. Pretty easy for anyone to copy and build with a circular saw, a table saw, a drill and a few wrenches.
Since I saw this post I've run across two hoists and frames for sale. The only thing I wasn't able to do that I wanted to was make the deck tilt off. I wanted to be able to slide the deck off and replace with camper, bin, etc but the Anthony hoist would have required too much modification and I only have so much time. I'm just putting it out there.
