Speedo and odometer issues

Hey all it’s been a minute. I have a 1976 F100 2wd. Originally it came with a 360 and C6. I put a 390 in it, and kept the c6. Also, it had cruise control, and of course I took all of it out. I put a single speedo cable in it. My speedo gets to 60 mph and completely stops. Also the odometer does not roll continuously. It will roll forward and then roll backwards. Any help I would appreciate!! Thanks!!

Well you might try to put the 2 part speedo cable back in (if you still have it?) and see if that helps. And or put a different one piece cable in see if that fixes it. Or just drive around at a indicated 60 MPH, even though you feel like you are doing 70 or 80.

Rolling forwards and rolling backwards??? That is really weird. First things I would check are the speedo gears in the tail and whether the cable is binding. Neither should cause both problems, but it might point you to a solution.

There also may be issues in the speedometer head, but until you know that you are getting good info from the transmission, trying to isolate those issues may be frustrating, if not impossible.

This really sounds like multiple unrelated issues, so fixing one issue may lead you to the next issue solution.

Of course you can. I have a 77 F350 stock that will cruise at 65mph on freeways with light hills.

Can you... teach me how to... make my odo roll back by itself? Asking for a friend.........

That said - I had a bit of a similar issue with an old speedometer that I thought, at first, was speedo cable related but ended up the speedo went bad. The symptom was while cruising, it all of the sudden (as I was slowing down), did a smooth sweep all the way to 100 MPH, and then as I stopped the truck it smoothly went back to 40 MPH and never changed from that point on. Just got stuck there. The odometer, however, continued to work. All this to say is - could the speedo just gone bad? You can take them out fairly easily and use a drill to gently get it up to speed and see what the needle and odo do.

Odometer is directly connected to the speedo cable while the speedo head is connected via magnetism. So if odometer is working there are no issues relating to info transfer from drivetrain to speedo cluster.
