For it to completely stop and not be intermittent there is probably a break in either the cable or the speedo gear on the transmission. In either case that would probably be a result of the cable lacking lubrication.

If you have cruise control you actually have 2 cables - 1 from the speedo to a transducer that I think is under the hood close to the firewall, and 1 from there back to the transmission. But, w/o cruise you just have one from the speedo to the back of the tranny.

In either case, the one from the speedo itself is accessed from the speedo end. You have to release the cable from the back of speedo and pull the cable out. Don't remember if that can be done w/o pulling the speedo itself. If you have cruise the bottom one is accessed from the transducer.

Make sure they are complete and lube them. And, you can pull the speedo gear off the tranny by taking the hold-down bolt off and see if it is intact.

You can disconnect the speedo cable from the gauge on a non-cruise truck by removing the cluster and pulling it away from the dash just enough to get your hand in there to push on the tab and disconnect it. If you don't have enough slack, you can disconnect the transmission end of the cable and that will allow you to have enough slack to pull the cluster out more.
