ok tried several times on the way back from our storage unit. Still hesitating then dying with the fuel cap off. Could the pump be bad? Should I try with the return line disconnected and let it dump into a bucket?

And to top it off, I think my front pump seal just blew

If it hasnt been suggested, unplug the can-p solenoid if its equipped, or block the canister ports on the throttle body, and if there is a solenoid, then unplug it electrically, leave the gas cap off to prevent that from being an issue for the test.
Then if you have a problem unchanged, go ahead and hook up. If you have improvement, then do the same with the EGR
