Anyone have a procedure to check cam timing to verify if the timing chain has jumped?
I have a C-550 with a 292 that acts like the timing chain has jumped when I try to start it. Wants to start but won't run. Been through the carb and ignition system.
Some engine manufacturers publish a procedure to set the crank to tdc on the dampener then check the lift/movement of the valve on a certain cylinder with a dal indicator as you turn the crank a certain amount. I don't find anything in the service manual on this. Not interested in pulling the front cover if I the timing chain doesn't need repalced. thanks in advance.
Start by locating the TDC mark on the harmonic balancer. Then remove the #1 plug wire from the distributor cap, mark the distributor body with a marks a lot then remove the cap. Bump the starter watching as it lines up with the mark. When the rotor lines up with the marked spot the TDC on the balancer must line up with the timing pointer. If the 2 marks will not line up then the timing chain is the problem.

Thanks for the tip. It is very difficult at best to try to get a good visual on the distributor as this engine is in a C-Series truck and the rear cab mount is right over the distributor, and the front of the body prevents viewing from behind. I did find a spec in the service manual for intake opening and exhaust closing relative to TDC. I think I will try that. Thanks again.
