Heater hose replacement

I am replacing the heater hoses in my 1960 F100 with a I-6 engine. I am not sure if the 5/8-inch hoses were originally connected properly so wanted to double check. When I bought the truck the heater control value was turned off, and I am a warm weather driver so never turned it on. The 5/8-inch heater hose connecting to the heater control value above the water pump connects to which male connecter at the firewall (going into the heater: Top or Bottom)? The way it was hooked up was the bottom line going to the heater core was going to the male connector with the heater control value at the water pump. The shop manual did not make it clear and some things I read on the web seemed to say that it does not matter. I did a thread search but did not find anything conclusive. I figured it's better to ask.

Heater Cutoff on top. Assume the bottom is the return from the heater core.

Thanks in advance.
